Let me describe how I view psychotherapy.
I view the therapeutic relationship as a vessel to help you change, grow, and gain insight so you can reach your goals and desires to live your best life possible.
I aim to create a welcoming and safe environment where you’ll feel comfortable sharing your concerns and challenges.
Your session is a place to tell me about your important experiences, what they mean to you,
and what strong feelings are connected to them.
I use several techniques, including cognitive behavioral therapy and insight work,
to support and motivate you to help you move forward.
Psychotherapy requires active involvement, both your's and mine.
A part of therapy will be practicing new skills that you will learn in our sessions.
Change will sometimes be easy and quick, but sometimes it can be slow and frustrating,
and you will need to keep trying.
There are no instant, painless cures.
However, you can learn new ways of looking at your problems
that can be helpful for changing your feelings and reactions.
Most of my clients see me once a week, and we usually meet for a 45-50minute session.
We schedule sessions for both your and my convenience, according to space available.
For our first few sessions, we will be discussing a lot of basic information and doing some history-gathering. Within a reasonable period of time after the initiation of treatment, I will discuss with you my working understanding of the problem, treatment plan, therapeutic objectives, and my view of the possible outcomes of treatment. In your treatment plan, we can list the areas you want to work on, the goals, the timeframe, and other components. From time to time, we will review your goals and progress. If we think there is a need, we can change your treatment plan and/or its methods.
Therapy comes to an end when your treatment goals have been met. The process of ending therapy, called “termination,” is a valuable part of the work. Stopping therapy should not be done casually. Either of us may decide to end it, if we believe it is in your best interest. If you wish to stop therapy at any time, I ask that you agree to meet for at least one session to review our work together. We will review our goals, the work we have done, any future work that needs to be done, and your options for continued treatment. If you would like to take a “time out” from therapy to try it on your own, we can discuss the most productive way to handle this.
Usually, I take notes during our meetings. If you are uncomfortable with this, please let me know.
